Southwest, AirTran, and Jet Blue are well known for their discount airfares and their convenient flight itineraries. While these carriers have distinguished themselves as big league discounters, they are no longer the automatic choice for cheap airfare.
Why, you ask?
Well, the traditional airlines (USAirways, United, Delta and the like) have been trimming the fat lately and are now turning out some awesome airfares. Since the old players are stepping back up, it's best that you shop around and keep your eyes and ears wide open all the time.
Remember that each of the airlines have specialty (niche) itineraries.

Thanks for placing my ad, it's appreciated. Though I would say Southwest is still the airline of choice for us. It is cheaper than the others everytime we've checked. We thought once that wasn't going to be the case until we added the additional cost of bags for the other airlines and then Southwest was hands down still cheaper, plus more flexible in it's time, takes us where we need to go.
Great post! It can help travelers to decide as to what airline to choose from the three big league discounter airfares.
